As someone who owns an RV and a boat I find plastic storage baskets of various kinds extremely useful and I keep a bunch of them handy all the time. Since they are easily stackable – a bit like matryoshka dolls, you know the Russian nesting dolls where the smaller one goes inside the larger one and so on. Since I need to store all manner of tools and utilities around, this kind of organizational skill in not only necessary but if you are on a boat then your very life can depend on it.
With the cities becoming more crowded than they already are, space has become dearer than gold in some cities. Therefore you need to get as much of your organizational mojo in place as possible. This may involve all kind of plastic organizational tools as well as certain level of good old common sense. Back to the topic of plastic baskets for storage though.
When compared to metal, wire or wicker and wood alternatives plastic storage baskets are clearly the best option available. They don’t swell during the rains like wood does when used outside not are they completely useless at handling anything sharp or heavy; a task which wicker can’t accomplish. Metal baskets while useful are unnecessarily heavy and are usually more expensive and you have to get the ones with the plastic coating or galvanized finish to ensure that they don’t rust off with moisture.
Plastic storage baskets with lids make for a great organizational tool. While you might consider open plastic baskets for storing items like newspapers, magazines and the like, the sheer ease with which plastic baskets with lids can be stacked upon each other should not be ignored. This kind of organization lets you use the same principle that were used to solve the housing crisis that came with so many people moving to the cities – vertical buildings. Put in all the shoes that you won’t be using for the winter and then stack them up in a large column and voila! your shoe problem is solved.
These baskets are also great for storing items like vegetables and fruits in the kitchen since they let the air pass through the gaps and holes in them. This allows the vegetables to breathe and thus keeps them fresh all through the season. If you use a couple of clear baskets to organize onions, potatoes, tomatoes and the like – items of daily use, you’ll find yourself saving a lot of time.
