Like the real estate guru Donald Trump once said, there just isn’t any space down here. New York needs vertical growth to cope with all the pressures of that the new population is putting on the city — and they did get vertical growth, provided by Mr. Trump himself. That allowed New York City to step into the new century with unprecedented population level managed in the most graceful manner possible.
Your ‘clutter’ is the same. It badly needs to be managed but putting them in a box and spreading them across the room is a highly inefficient way of doing it. The easiest way to deal with incoming clutter is to direct it to the right place and whole it may seem like a simple enough idea, it is far from a complete solution. The reason that it isn’t enough is because you aren’t starting from scratch, you are already stepping into a new organizational system with the things you already own. Plastic bins that can be stacked upon each other let you do that, use one ‘tower’ of bins for all the things that you had before you implemented the system. If the things fit in one tower then you can order them by type (socks, shoes, winter clothes I won’t wear for the next six months…) or by chronological order which works great for things like videos and photographs.
So how are plastic stackable bins different from your garden variety bins? They come with lids, for one. And these lids have grooves cut into them which fit in with the base of another box of the same type. What this does is makes stacking them on top of each other extremely easy. You can also buy stackable plastic bins without lids but the whole thing just works better with lids on. Another way that you can stack bins and baskets even when they weren’t meant to be stacked is buy buying them in consecutively smaller sizes — much like matryoshka dolls. So you just use the biggest box as a base and then place the smaller boxes on top and voila, you’re done.
If you are organizing things that would be best termed as ‘knick knacks’ or other things like stationary then what you need are stackable bins with paper and bin dividers inside them. This works especially well if you are doing up your children’s room where you can decorate the bins with ribbons and other embellishments.
