Many pet owners prefer wicker or wooden baskets over plastic dog baskets of any kind. There are a couple of reasons that this is the case. The ideas that mainly drive dog owners to react this way are the namely that wicker or wooden baskets look better than traditional plastic baskets, that they provide a better cross-supply of air through them which keeps their pet cool and the last and the least used reason – that the material is natural and organic.
While I would like to say they are all valid reasons to buy a wicker dog basket and that they may be for some folk, the truth of the matter is that plastic dog baskets beat anything that the wicker supporting crowd will throw at them hands down. And then some. This isn’t me being cocky here, it is the experience of owning five plus dogs (the sixth, Callisto is still a puppy so maybe that should read five and a half) over the span of a decade and my constant interaction with vets and pet owners alike.
Lets tackle the problem with the aesthetics of the plastic dog basket. Today, there are more than 750,000 types of styles and designs that are available online alone. Many of these style emulate not only wood patterns but the actually weaving of wicker as well. So you could get a plastic basket woven to look like a wicker basket in cauliflower blue or the classic dark brown that looks exactly like the wicker basket you want.
The second point is moot as long as you buy a specialty plastic dog basket. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, you just need to make sure it was manufactured for the use we intend to put it to. Modern dog baskets have small breathing holes cut out at the sides as well as the bottom to facilitate airflow. Also, if your dog has a bed wetting problem (like Callisto does when he is anxious) you can get baskets that have a trough at the bottom which can be taken out and cleaned when required. as far as the organic nature of the material is concerned all I can say is, just get a plastic dog basket made out of recycled materials.
The benefits of a plastic basket outweigh any concerns that you might have about them. They are stronger, sturdier and more reliable than anything that the competition can offer. And the best part? You dog can pulverize through one in the two minutes you were away answering the phone.
